Ms.
Schulman’s Broadway credits include the
Tony Award-winning THE SECRET GARDEN
as well as its highly successful
national tour; and the production of SWEENEY
TODD at Circle in the Square,
for which she and the production received a
Tony Award nomination. She directed the U.S.
and Australian national tours of THE
SOUND OF MUSIC. The Broadway production,
which Ms. Schulman also directed, was nominated
for a Tony Award and an Outer Critics Circle
Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.
Ms. Schulman’s is currently working on
the Broadway bound musical A LITTLE
PRINCESS written by Brian Crawley
and Andrew Lippa. She is also developing the
musical HEARTLAND.
Ms. Schulman just returned from Australia where
she directed the currently running national
tour of MAN OF LA MANCHA
starring Anthony Warlow. Other recent directorial
work includes the City Center Encores! production
of A CONNECTICUT YANKEE
and the Manhattan Theatre Club's TIME
AND AGAIN, and a reading of THE
GOOD COMPANIONS produced by The
York Theatre Company. Ms. Schulman lit up the
stage at the Stratford Festival where she directed
the critically acclaimed new production of FIDDLER
ON THE ROOF with Brent Carver.
Other recent credits include the National Tour
of SUNSET BLVD. and
critically acclaimed productions of MAN
OF LA MANCHA for the Stratford
Festival, THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE
for the City Center ENCORES! series, and VIOLET
for A.C.T. in Seattle. Ms. Schulman was nominated
for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director
of a Musical for the premiere of VIOLET
for Playwrights Horizons; the production won
the Lucille Lortel award for Outstanding Musical
and the NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best
Musical. She received the 1995 Obie Award for
directing Sondheim and Furth's musical MERRILY
WE ROLL ALONG at the York Theatre
Company, a production which also received the
Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Revival,
as well as several Outer Critics and Drama Desk
nominations. Ms. Schulman also directed ROYAL
FAMILY at the McCarter Theatre;
the premiere of JACK'S HOLIDAY
for Playwrights Horizons (Outer Critics nomination);
the Australian national tour of THE
SECRET GARDEN; and served as a
consultant on the North American tour of TAP
DOGS. Other critically acclaimed
productions include the national tour of ANNIE
GET YOUR GUN; the world premiere
of A SMALL DELEGATION
in Philadelphia; ALLEGRO
for the City Center ENCORES! series; COMPANY
for the York Theatre; and CARNIVAL
and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
for the Equity Library Theatre. Ten of Ms. Schulman's
productions have been taped for the Lincoln
Center Library Theatre-on-Film Archives. Her
regional credits include SUMMER
AND SMOKE, MACBETH, THE MIRACLE WORKER, WIND
IN THE WILLOWS, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, THE
PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE, WHAT THE BUTLER SAW,
TABLE MANNERS and THE
INNOCENTS. She previously served
as the resident director at the Pittsburgh Civic
Light Opera for eight seasons, directing
FOLLIES, 110 IN THE SHADE, FUNNY GIRL, 1776
and WEST SIDE STORY,
among others. Her television credits include
the Ace-nominated special SMITHSONIAN
SALUTES DISNEY and ON
STAGE for PBS. Ms. Schulman is
a graduate of the NY High School for Performing
Arts, Hofstra University, where she was recently
awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane
Letters, and the Yale University Drama School.
She is on the Board of Directors of the Society
of Stage Directors and Choreographers. Ms. Schulman
is a native New Yorker.
